Bruce Barnes combines his love of the outdoors and architecture with his painting. He has hiked and painted as he traveled in Oregon, California, Canada, and across Europe. His sketchbook, paints, and brushes are always part of his pack.
Late in his career as technical director for a pharmaceutical firm, at the urging of an artist friend, Bruce began studying art and watercolor through U.C.Berkeley extension courses. This soon led to an invitation to join the Berkeley Watercolor Society.
He retired in 1993 to spend a happy decade in Mount Shasta where he hiked, fly-fished, skied, and participated in local activities. Painting was always high on his agenda as he became a member of the Siskiyou Artists’ Association, and founded a local plein air painting club. In 2002 he moved to Ashland where he quickly joined the Rogue Valley art world. He now paints en plein air with The Artists’ Workshop in Jacksonville, Ashland’s Urban Sketchers, The Rogue River Artists Group, and the OLLI watercolor SIG. He has attended numerous painting workshops, and is guided by his painting icons James Fletcher Watson, David Howell, and Virgil Harton, all Englishmen.
Bruce is a past member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, was featured in Ashland Magazine, and twice has been voted one of the favorite artists in Ashland. Dozens of his paintings are now displayed in homes and businesses across the country, with a few in Europe. He created and conducted popular OLLI classes at SOU focusing on plein air sketching and watercolor painting. He has been featured in a dozen or more one-artist showings at Valley galleries and wineries.
