Carla Griffin was raised in Elk Creek and Eagle Point, Oregon. Her mother was a self-taught artist, and though there were no opportunities for training while she was growing up, due to her mother’s influence Carla has been transfixed all her life by shapes, colors, surfaces and reflections. While Carla was unable to take instruction while she was raising her two girls, she was always observing, wondering how she could catch the light and beauty of the world.
Carla spent 19 years in Texas making a living so she could retire to her home state of Oregon. Her late husband and she were married 10 years and took wonderful trips to the great museums in Europe, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston and Chicago.
After she retired and remarried, Burton and she moved to Grants Pass. She was active in the Friends of the Symphony and the Rose Society before starting her art journey. Jeff Gogue introduced her to Ryan Moon at Southern Oregon Art Academy. Because of her appreciation of the traditional art of Europe, the school was a perfect fit. In 2012 Carla graduated from their three year program having studied with Ryan Moon, Chris Tullis and Judy Clayton.
Carla has won numerous local awards for her art including Best of Show from the Josephine County Artists Association and Painting of the Year from Southern Oregon Society of Artists. Griffin has also been accepted into three Pastel Society of Oregon’s judged shows with awards in two of them and is now a Signature member. The Pastel Society of the West Coast also accepted an entry from Griffin.
“It is my desire to awaken in the viewer the delight that arises from careful observation.”
