I am moved by the sweet and funny things animals do.
They are the only subject of my paintings.
Many of my paintings feature animals from shelters and sanctuaries. I am inspired by the resilience of these animals, some of which have come from bad situations. The animals’ past is important, and what I know about each animal’s history is included on the back of each painting, print and card.
Before beginning each painting, I look through many photographs (mine and sometimes photographs taken by others who allow me to paint from them) to find one, or a combination of photos, that truly represent that animal. Then I crop the images in an interesting way for a whimsical, engaging composition. At that point, the painting can begin – first, drawn in pencil on a gridded canvas, then measured and adjusted, and finally, painted in layers of oil color and some glazing, which I allow to dry in between painting sessions. The backgrounds are always simple, a solid bold color, or pattern – something complementary to the animal’s expression.
After departing corporate life, Dana got serious about her interest in animals and art, taking up oil painting and volunteering at the local animal shelter. She is now the proud mother to four former shelter dogs and two rescued bunnies, as well as an award-winning oil painter.
Dana is a member of the Ashland Gallery Association, Rogue Women and HeARTS Speak, an international artists’ group with the mission to create a unified voice for animals through art. Dana continues to volunteer at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, and is a board member for Sanctuary One, a non-profit care farm in the Applegate Valley.
All of Dana’s sales proceeds are donated to animal charities
