I have been painting now for almost four years. My creative life has been spent teaching, acting, singing, writing, directing plays, composing, playing guitar and mandolin, and performing. Drawing and designing sets for play production had been the closest thing to the painting jag. I was living in Scotland and a dear friend and artist suggested I take a weekend class in oil painting from Irish artist Phillip Gray and I was immediately hooked into a new creative direction. I moved to Ashland after a summer acting for the Oregon Cabaret Theater. I was fortunate to join the ART AND SOUL Gallery, and also show in Medford at the Art Du Jour Gallery.
My inspiration comes from my family first. Daughter Sarah has been a painter most of her life and I am always surprised by the beauty and technique she finds with each new piece. Son Joel painted, worked with wood and metal and mixed media as a Property Master in the theatre. And as a committed Pollyanna, my subjects always reflect the positive sides of nature, relationships and human condition.
My style has been called bold and emotional. I am drawn to dark and rich colors that I respond to with palpable emotion. Being new at the process, I try to put my hand to a variety of subjects. Current show pieces represent landscapes in Oregon and Scotland, memories of my deceased son, and purely abstracts as well. Usually, even my representational paintings are more reflective of my emotional response to what I see than photographic reproduction of what I see. So…Emotional memories, Scotland, California, now Oregon…all are Journeys of the Heart.
